Touristy Tuesdays: The Blow Hole

by A Cajun Down Under on July 13, 2010

About 2 hours drive from Sydney down the south coast lies the township of Kiama.  Most famous for it’s ‘blow hole’, this romantic little historic harbour town is a personal favorite of The Aussie and I for a quick weekend getaway or a camping trip.  With plenty of cafes, restaurants and quaint shops there is always something to see or do.  Add in some farmers or craft markets by the seaside on a Saturday morning and life is good.

But, really people travel to Kiama to see the natural wonder that is the ‘blow hole’.  This rock formation has a great big hole in the middle where spray from the Pacific Ocean blows right through.  It is pretty cool to see.  And, if you are into people watching, the blow hole is ideal.  There are scores of people with their cameras trained on the big hole in the middle of the bigger rock waiting and waiting only to get distracted as soon as the hole begins to blow.  Then the waiting starts all over again.  Can you guess how many times we had to wait to catch this shot?

I wish I could recommend a fabulous place to stay, but, other than camping at the holiday parks, we have not had much luck with accommodation in Kiama.  No place I’d stay again anyway.  But, the food is a different story.  I fell in love with 55 on Collins last visit, and this cozy little restaurant will be top of my list next time we visit Kiama.

If you are willing to venture out of town, the south coast wineries are available for tastings a short drive away.  And the beautiful 7 mile beach is just a few km’s down the road.

I’m so grateful that I was able to experience Kiama and the beautiful beach and blowhole and lighthouse (and tea room) during my visit to Australia! The town sets the stage for resetting your priorities and focusing on spending time with those important people in your life while soaking up nature’s beauty surrounding you. Landlocked Dallas, TX, USA just doesn’t even come close! I’d go back in a heartbeat!

That was a great trip, Carol. Looking forward to doing it again next time you are Down Under.
