Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Sydney’s own Zydeco band, Squeezebox Boogaloo.
Geoff, the band’s accordion player, found this here blog and invited me along to the show. I am so happy he found me because it really never would have occurred to me to look for a Zydeco band here in Sydney. However, Squeezebox Boogaloo have been bringing Zydeco music for Sydney since 1999, before this Cajun girl set foot on Australian soil.
The music was fantastic! The girls and I were singing and beboping along to some of our favorite tunes like Jambalaya, Mardi Gras Mambo, and Don’t Mess With My Toot Toot. There was a nice size crowd, and several people were up dancing and having a great time. If I closed my eyes, I would have sworn I was in a Lafayette Louisiana instead of Sydney Australia. All that was missing was a cold Abita beer.
The band were playing at the Blue Plate Bar & Grill, a groovy American restaurant Neutral Bay. It was my first visit there, but it won’t be my last. I had my first ever deep-fried jalapeno poppers which were delicious, and The Aussie raved about Philly Frank’s Cheesesteak. Although I didn’t try them, Blue Plate had two Cajun favorites, Jambalaya and Gumbo, too. You’ll never guess what else they had on the menu.
The Wedge! And, just last week I said I’d never seen a Wedge on a Sydney menu. Looks like that Wedge revolution has hit Australian shores after all, at least in this American restaurant.
Sending out a big Thank You to Geoff and the rest of Squeezebox Boogaloo for making this homesick Cajun girl feel like she was back in Louisiana for a few hours on Sunday afternoon.
If you’d like to break out your dancing shoes and experience Squeezebox Boogaloo for yourself, they will be playing at the Blue Plate Bar & Grill on Sunday November 18 from 4-7 pm.
