A Day At The Sydney Royal Easter Show

by A Cajun Down Under on April 2, 2010

Yesterday, The Aussie and I took our girls to the Sydney Royal Easter Show which is on at Sydney Olympic Park until April 14.

The Royal Easter Show is when “the bush comes to town”.  It’s a bit like 4H meets the state fair.  There are all types of farm animals that are shown and judged, and also carnival rides and show bags galore.

We stuck mainly to the animal path, and the farmyard petting zoo was such a big hit with the girls that we visited it twice.  I think we probably bought a whole sheep with the amount of feed cups the girls went through.  Lizzie was quite timid with the animals (like her mom), but Grace is a born animal lover.  There would be 5 or 6 sheep, goats, lambs, and kids jockeying for position to get to her feed cup, but Grace did not even flinch.  She was completely in her element, and I suspect that she will be filling our home with pets as soon as she is able.

We visited the food halls and caught the pound cake judging.  I thought this sounded like a great job and wanted to know where to volunteer.  Then, I watched the lady actually judge the cakes, and in the 7 cakes we watched, she did not actually even taste one of them.  The first was too dark… the second had tell-tell signs on undissolved sugar… the third she actually cut open and determined it was too dry… and so on.  Not a fun job after all, and here I thought it was all about the taste. Who knew?

One of my favorite parts of the food halls, other than the obvious free taste tests, are the regional agricultural exhibits.  These exhibits are made entirely of fruit, vegetables, and grains grown in each region, and they are spectacular.

The Central District cows were my hands down favorite.

There was the Drunken Wino Cow.

The Pickled Cow.

The Sunny Side Up Cow.

And, last but not least, the Swiss Cow.

Then it was over to the wood chopping competition.  For some reason I cannot explain, I was completely transfixed by these guys chopping wood.  At least in the competitions we watched, the Kiwi’s were sweeping the field.

Not to be left out, Team USA was also represented.

It was great day!  The girls, The Aussie, and I all had fun and left tired, but smiling.

Elizabeth, At least in the competitions we watched, the American (and the Australians for that matter) was beaten by the Kiwi (New Zealander), but the wood chopping competition continues daily throughout the Easter Show. It is really cool to watch. I would have loved to see them fell the big trees, but the girls were ready to move on to more animals.
