Geaux Tigers!

by A Cajun Down Under on September 3, 2010

This weekend the LSU Tigers kick off their 2010 season. They will be facing off against the UNC Tar Heels at the Georgia Dome. Like everyone else, we are hoping for a big win for the Tigers and will be decked out in our purple and gold watching the game on the big screen.

I dug into the archives to pull out this footage of my Lizzie giving us her best rendition of Hey Fighting Tigers. She was only 2 at the time. Not bad for a little Aussie girl.

Touristy Tuesdays: Beignets

by A Cajun Down Under on September 1, 2010

While I’m visiting Louisiana I’ve decided to branch out my Touristy Tuesdays segment to include some of the wonderful things to see, do and eat here in South Louisiana.  I’m sure all you Aussie’s are wondering “Why am I seeing Touristy Tuesdays on a Wednesday?”  All I can say is that I am operating on Louisiana time now, and it is still Tuesday here.

No trip to Louisiana is complete without getting completely covered in powdered sugar as you devour an order of beignets.  A beignet (pronounced ben-yay) is a deep fried, square doughnut served with a generous helping of powdered sugar on top.  And no order of beignets is complete without a Cafe au Lait on the side to wash them down.  Simply delicious!

In New Orleans, the locals and tourists flock to the famous Cafe du Monde for a beignet fix.  But, here in Baton Rouge, Coffee Call has been serving up beignets for as long as any of us can remember.  Sadly, their old location was torn down in the name of progress for a Walmart parking lot.  While the new place does not quite have the same charm, the beignets and cafe au lait are better then ever.

My mom and I made our way over to Coffee Call today to treat the girls to their first ever beignet. I dare say that it will not be their last.

Very happy girls indeed.

And, after being born and raised in Baton Rouge, I should have known better than to wear a black shirt to eat beignets.  I was covered in powdered sugar, but they tasted so good, I did not really care.

If you are passing any time in Baton Rouge, make a trip over to the Coffee Call for some fresh beignets.   You will not be disappointed.  They are located at 3132 College Drive and are open 24 hours for some sugary goodness.

If you are not able to make it down to South Louisiana anytime soon but are desperate for a beignet, Marguerite over at Cajun Delights has this delicious recipe.

Enjoy!

Hummingbirds

by A Cajun Down Under on August 31, 2010

All my life I’ve heard of Hummingbirds.  We also had Hummingbird feeders when I was growing up.  But, it was not until this week that I actually saw my first Hummingbird.

I was so surprised at just how small they are.  And, they must definitely get their name from the hum of their wings.   Of course, the first time this little guy came to our feeder, Lizzie and I got so excited that he flew off. Thankfully he came back, and my mom captured these pictures.

Look at this little guy perched on top of the plant stand.

In this shot you can see his little wings flapping so fast creating the famous humming sound.

The feeder is set up just outside the kitchen window. So we are treated to Hummingbirds coming to feed several times per day. They don’t stay at the feeder for very long, but they put on quite a show.

Louisiana Hot

by A Cajun Down Under on August 30, 2010

As anyone who has ever been to Louisiana in summer knows, there is Hot, and then there is Louisiana Hot.

I am a lover of the heat, and on our trip over, I was the only one rejoicing when we got off the plane at DFW and the wall of dry heat hit me.  But, it was more like walking into a sauna when exiting the New Orleans airport.  You see, there is another dimension to the heat down here – humidity.

As all you Cajun’s already know, if it 97°F in Louisiana then it is also 97% humidity.  It is really just a constant state of moisture.  I always laugh when Sydneysiders start complaining about the ‘high’ humidity because once you live in South Louisiana, you realize that anything less than 80%  is really not ‘high’.

I got such a kick out of watching Pat Shingleton report the Baton Rouge weather on Channel 2 the other night.  He was quite happily reporting good news to all the residents that the humidity would be going down from the “Unbearable” category to be only “Very Humid”. Ahh, I just love my home state!

Australia Votes

August 28, 2010

I have been somewhat remiss in detailing the Australian election.  Pardon me for waiting, and waiting, and waiting for some sort of clear result, but it looks like that is a ways off. I would not have even thought this was possible had I not lived through the 2000 US Presidential election.
Thankfully, Australians will not [...]

In The Summertime

August 24, 2010

We have skipped Spring and hit Louisiana in the hottest part of the year for an instant Summertime.  It is hot, hot, hot, and I am in my element.  Everyone here thinks I’m nuts, but I am loving the warmer weather.
The girls and I have been recovering from our harrowing trip and having some fun [...]

Finally

August 21, 2010

Let me revise my previous projections.
1 mama
2 toddlers
3 airplanes
4 suitcases
51 hour journey
Yes, our usual 28 hour trip from Sydney to Baton Rouge took a whopping 51 hours this time around.  We got delayed in LA due to a canceled flight.  After watching 3 other planes take off without our names being called from the standby [...]

Baton Rouge or Bust

August 17, 2010

Tomorrow, my girls and I will be boarding the ‘flying kangaroo’ for the very long journey to Baton Rouge.
1 mama
2 toddlers
3 airplanes
4 suitcases
28 hour journey
Yes, I’ve lost my mind.  And, I am definitely not looking forward to all the hassles that traveling alone with 2 toddlers entails.  However, I’ve never been one to dwell on [...]

Champagne, Anyone?

August 15, 2010

Today, I hosted a Bridal Shower for my Sister In Law to be.   The Aussie’s brother will be marrying his lady love later this year, so I decided to get all the girls over to celebrate.  It was good fun, and I think the bride really enjoyed herself.  And, she racked up some really great [...]
