Cajun Porn 2: Cookin’ With Brother Mike – Day 16 & 17

by A Cajun Down Under on January 8, 2012

One of my all time favorite pastimes is cooking with my brother.  We share a love of all things food.  We spend our time talking about food and all the new recipes we’ve tried recently.  Sadly due to the distance, we spend a lot of time talking about food.  So when we do get together, we “show off” our new skills and cook together.  It’s lots of fun, and I always learn a trick or two.  But, let’s not forget about the food.  It’s good!  Amazingly good!

We spent a whole weekend at my brother’s house this trip, and we cooked up a storm.   We started off with some crawfish etoufee and crawfish cornbread.

acdu666

It was so good that I had to go for seconds.  It skipped the rice this time and ladled the etoufee right on top of the cornbread.  Mmmm, mmmm, good!

acdu671

For dessert, my sister-in-law made her famous chocolate pie.  I’ll admit that it’s not the prettiest pie in the world, but the way it tastes. OMG, it is chocolate meringue heaven.

acdu672

Later that evening, my sister-in-law and I decided that cocktails were in order – Cosmo’s.  I’ll spare you the Sex in the City jokes that seemed so funny at the time, but don’t make much sense now.

acdu665

The next morning my brother made this frittata.  He did not let my aversion to eggs get in his way.  I picked at it a bit, but I really just don’t like eggs.  The Aussie, however, loved it.

acdu673

I made homemade buttermilk biscuits to go along with it.  These were much more to my liking given the total absence of eggs.

acdu674

Looking at all these picture now, it’s hard to believe we were still eating, but, alas, there is more to come.   Sunday dinner started with some delicious smoked Cajun sausages.

acdu667

And, some stuffed jalapenos.  I love these!

acdu670

For the main course, my brother made his famous Muffulburger with homemade chips.  It’s what happens when a Muffuletta meets a hamburger.  From the outside, it looks like any ordinary burger.

acdu669

But, when you bite into it, you find a muffuletta inside.

acdu668

I may not need to eat again for a week, but I loved every bite!

Cajun Porn 2: Praline Cheesecake – Day 15

by A Cajun Down Under on January 5, 2012

Day 15 saw us take a leisurely drive over to Hammond to lunch at Tope La.  My mom treated me to lunch there during my last trip, and on the drive over all I could talk about was the cheesecake.  The Praline Cheesecake to be exact.   I have been dreaming about it for 6 months now, and I could not wait to have my very own slice.  No sharing this time!

While I’m not at all opposed to having dessert first, I decided to go the more traditional route and save the cheesecake for last.  I had the roast beef poboy soup for starters.  I am in love with this soup.  It is rich and delicious, and every roast beef poboy should taste just like it.

acdu662

Next, I had the Shrimp and Artichoke Stack.  More shrimp.  Are you surprised?

acdu661

Like everything at Tope La, this dish was rich.  The artichoke cakes were divine.  While I initially thought they were skimpy with the shrimp, it turns out they were just buried in the stack.  Yum!

The Aussie had the Chicken Fried Steak.  However, instead of steak, Tope La’s version was made with pork tenderloin and was covered in an andouille cream sauce.  I’ve never made chicken fired steak with pork before, but rest assured I will be recreating this one in my kitchen ASAP.

acdu664

I was pretty full after all this and debated about skipping the much-anticipated cheesecake for a split second.  Then, I came to my senses and ordered my very own piece.   I somehow manged to make it through every last bite and licked the plate clean for good measure.

acdu663

The classic cheesecake is a cut above the standard, but when that warm praline sauce is drizzled on top, it’s magic.  I’ll be dreaming about this one for many months to come.  Maybe it’s a good thing I don’t live too close.

Cajun Porn 2: Shrimp & Shrimp – Day 14

by A Cajun Down Under on January 4, 2012

I feel like Bubba from Forrest Gump with all the shrimp I ate on Day 14.

“… shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich, …”

All these years later, and that quote still makes me smile.

I shared 2 of my favorite shrimp dishes with one of my favorite people today.   My friend Angie and I met for lunch at Mike Willie’s.  I discovered this little gem last time I was in BR, and I was delighted to enjoy their food again.

Angie and I could not decide, so we ordered 2 dishes and shared.  I simply could not go past the shrimp poboy with sweet potato fries.  Yum!

acdu659

We also had the New Orleans style BBQ Shrimp.  OMG!  This was so, so good.  I wanted to lift up that bowl and drink the sauce.  I would have had to fight Angie off though as she had the same idea.

acdu658

Ordinarily, this would have seen me finished for the day.  But, another friend, Jodi, presented me with some homemade peanut butter fudge.  Really, could anyone resist this?

acdu660

Yum!  My girls were only too happy to help me with these.

Cajun Porn 2: Christmas Lights & Beignets – Day 13

by A Cajun Down Under on December 24, 2011

Tonight we took the girls out to look at the Christmas lights.  We started with the Messenger’s Christmas Land.  The Messenger’s have been putting on a Griswold style Christmas in Baton Rouge since long before anyone ever heard of Clark and Ellen.

acdu5132

I remember going to see the lights at the Messenger’s house when I was Lizzie’s age.  They’ve moved since then, but a lot of the displays are the same.  For me it was a walk down memory lane while seeing everything new again through the wonder of my daughter’s eyes.

acdu5130

The North Pole was always my favorite as a kid.  Every year the Messenger’s add a new display, and this year “A Gingerbread Christmas” was introduced.

acdu5131

My pictures do not offer any appreciation of how huge this this Christmas display really is, but if you are anywhere in the local area, you really need to see the Messenger’s Christmas Land for yourself.

acdu5133

From there we drove around town looking at the light displays.   Here’s another family proudly put their “Griswold” out there for everyone to see.

acdu5128

My favorite part of this display was Santa riding the alligator.  Rumor has it that the lady of the house actually shot this gator herself before she had him stuffed and added him to the Christmas show.  Only in Louisiana, folks.

acdu5129

The Baton Rouge Zoo also has a fantastic display.  It was a cold walk around the zoo, but we stayed warm by singing Grace’s favorite Christmas Carol “Anise Mobidod”.  You may know it as “Feliz Navidad”.

acdu5136

The train was everyone’s favorite.

acdu5135

Finally, we finished the night at Coffee Call to warm up with beignets and Cafe au Lait.  The lady preparing the beignets put the powdered sugar on top then asked Lizzie if that was enough.  Of course Lizzie said no, and then the really piled it on.  Too much for me, but Lizzie was in heaven.

acdu5126

I was lucky enough to enjoy the beignets at Coffee Call twice today.  Bliss!

Cajun Porn 2: More Home Cookin’ – Day 12

December 23, 2011
wood fired roasted root vegeables

Another day, another meal in the wood fired oven.  It’s a tough life.  Tonight, my mom roasted a couple of chooks (chickens) and some veggies. I just love it when she roasts chicken this way.  Finger lickin’ good! And, the mixed root veggies were roasted to perfection. I could get used to this. Yum!   [...]

Cajun Porn 2: Home Cookin’ – Day 11

December 23, 2011
steak in wood fired oven

After a string of restaurant meals, we thought it was time for some home cooking.  Of course, with a wood fired oven in the back yard, home cooking takes on a whole new dimension. The Aussie said he felt like a steak.  There are some great steak restaurants in town, but we do a pretty [...]

Cajun Porn 2: Bacon Bloody Mary – Day 10

December 18, 2011
bacon bloody mary

We have been on a tour of Baton Rouge restaurants lately, and Day 10 is no exception.  This morning, we went to brunch at Beausoleil with my sister and her boyfriend. Beausoleil is not the same old boring brunch, and I realized I was in for something different when the waitress presented us with a [...]

Cajun Porn 2: Fajita’s and Beignets – Day 9

December 17, 2011
coyote blues fajitas

I have a confession to make, dear readers.  I am an absolute sucker for Tex-Mex.   I love it almost as much as Cajun food.  Despite an extensive search and several less than spectacular meals, I’ve yet to find a Mexican restaurant in Sydney that I’d go back to.  I pretty much gave up a few [...]

Cajun Porn 2: Cheesecake x 2 – Day 8

December 17, 2011
red velvet cheesecake

Day 8 found The Aussie and I calling in for a quick lunch at The Chimes East while trying to finish our Christmas shopping.  I spent many an evening at The Chimes in my LSU days, so I was happy to find a location on this side of town. I talked The Aussie into sharing [...]

Cajun Porn 2: Zea’s – Day 7

Zea's chicken sandwich

I’m running a bit behind on my Cajun Porn 2 series.  Rest assured that I have been eating and taking pictures of it all to share with you, but between the holidaying, Christmas shopping, eating and catching up with family and friends, I’ve not had much screen time. Hold on to your seats though as [...]
